Our Challenge

Almost half a million Solomon Islanders are below the age of 34, making up around 70% of the country's total population.

The country also has one of the highest youth unemployment rates in the region at around 80%, making young Solomon Islanders one of the most vulnerable groups in our society.

Every year there are 16,000 – 18,000 young job seekers entering the job market (6,000 of who are school push outs) however, only 4,000 jobs are created each year.

YECSI, a Public Private Partnership (PPP), was born out of a deep concern for the future prospects of the country's youths under such a high unemployment figure and a need to ensure that young Solomon Islanders are seen as a demographic dividend rather than a demographic time-bomb

What We Are Doing About It

YECSI is building a vibrant community of young Solomon Islands entrepreneurs that contribute to the socio-economic development of the Solomon Islands.

YECSI recognises that young entrepreneurs can play a crucial role in helping to reduce youth unemployment in a significant portion of the country's population through the creation of an alternative employment path for people between the ages of 18 and 40, ensuring that young entrepreneurs are seen as a demographic dividend to the nation.

Youth unemployment continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing the Solomon Islands, painting a bleak picture for Solomon Islands’ largest demography. The causes are complex and deeply rooted.

Our work focuses on combating this unemployment trend by supporting the development of entrepreneurship amongst young Solomon Islanders and providing opportunities for them to build their professional networks. We create an environment that enables the continued growth of entrepreneurship amongst young people.
